@Ness: Welcome back
@timble: Its great IMHO .. it depends on your comfort level, skill level, and your preferences in user interface. Linux IMHO, was never meant to be enjoyed in a window based GUI environment.

I've FINALLY done it...I've broken free of my lazy-ass-do-nothing lifestyle that I've been stuck in almost my entire life. Always avoiding things I should do and always doing things the easy way just because I was lazy as hell.

For the last two or three months I've started to slowly, step by step to begin living a new life. Moving to a new fresh, just renovated apartment really was a key stepping stone. Getting up earlier was the first thing I did...no more sleeping to 4pm on a day I have no work!

All I can say, I fucking love this.

Today was my first day that I started to actually renovate my body completely. Having to be a more social person nowadays, instead of avoiding any contact to the outside world and people....I felt like I need to keep this physical construct that I am in, in a working shape for as long as my precoded self destruct sequence kicks in (aging).

I thought that the best way to achieve this was first to gear my body into better utilizing oxygen intake and usage, to get my body reworked on a cellular level before in a more mechanical level (muscles and joints etc). I went on a jogging run designed for couch-potatoes. 1min of running/jogging, and then 1,5minutes of walking: you repeat this 8 times without stopping at all.

First I thought: "Oh man that's easy I think lol I can do that". The first 1min felt easy like running to catch the bus or something. The second felt suddenly REALLLLLLLYYYYY bad and I felt like quitting there, my body went into "OH SHIT WERE ACTUALLY EXERCISING ALERT ALERT STOP ALL SYSTEMS WE ARE GOING RED I REPEAT WE ARE GOING RED!!!"
The third was the worst, I felt dizzy, my body was on fire and my lungs were quitting on me...but I had to push the 1min through.

The forth all of a sudden didn't feel much worse than the third, which was a good sign that maybe I can survive the fifth too.

On the fifth running minute something happened, I somehow started to feel slightly better....sure I was getting more exhausted, but it didn't.....hurt. I started to feel blood rushing all in me like I usually don't while sitting on a couch. I could feel every breath of mine replenish the oxygen in my blood, making one circle around me burning it up and coming back into my lungs as CO2. Every breath made my body more refreshed, if only I could have breathed in one continues breath. Recovering from the running intervals became much easier and faster.

The final two running intervals were hard as my body started to reach it's limit and my muscles were totally void of oxygen and I felt like I could tumble over. After the 8 cycles, I could barely stop my self in that slight downhill, as my legs were literally done. Took me 3 minutes to feel good again and while walking back home.....I felt REALLLLY good, I could feel my body in a state it has not been in manymanymany years. I felt every heartbeat and my sweat was actually serving a purpose now, instead of just annoying the heck out of me....I felt like I was alive for the first time in so many years. I think, if my body could have talked, it would have thanked me for doing this to it....even though it was struggling to keep me alive.

I almost had to force my self from running AGAIN while I was going back home My legs were saying "WERE BACK BABY AND WITH OXYGEN AGAIN......GO FOR IT YEAAAA RUNN FOREST RUN!"

I never.....want to go back into what I was 3 months ago and before that, that life really made me miserable inside and out.

Today...I woke up at 0200am and my computer had shut down, I use a sleep timer to shut it down....but SOMEHOW I KNEW there was something wrong with it so I got up and turned it on....well what you know, it didn't reboot anymore...the entire hard-drive was fucked up. How the hell could I have known something like this even when I was asleep?

So I started to install Windows XP at 0200am, installed it and used the WinXP to format my hdd and installed Windows 7 on it....got to sleep at 0500am and my alarm clock woke me up at 0600am. My work started at 0845am and I was at work for 10 HOURS!!! All I could think at my work was about my today's "marathon" training.

-------------------------------------------------

Today was my second exercise day after it started.....having two full days of healing behind me I got home from work (10 hours of work) and I put on my running shoes and clothes and went straight out the door.

Remember last time I was doing this training? After the second running interval I was half dead and almost quitted because of the pain and discomfort. Well, I am keeping a close track of my stamina and overall feelings and progress and how well I am adjusting to exercising.

I figured, that if the first exercise was at the very limits of my physical capabilities I am not going to do much better at the second exercise either....maybe see a little progress after a few weeks or so......but holy fuck.

After the second running interval I was expecting my self to whimper in pain and exhaustion like last time....but I barely EVEN LOST MY BREATH!

I was feeling ten times more energetic and breathing was thousand times easier and somehow it felt like I was getting more oxygen than ever before. When the time for the third running interval was about to come I was already fully recovered from the last two and started to do the third......and forth......fifth....at sixth I was feeling my muscles start to get more acidic but it still felt really good. I was able to finish the ENTIRE exercise with getting LESSexhausted than at the first's exercise's second running interval where I almost quitted!! What the hell?

To conclude. My stamina/overall fitness has increased over9000!! in one exercise(one exercise takes about 20-30min)? If at the first exercise, second interval I was feeling WORSE than in this entire second exercise.......I wonder how the third is going to feel like.

Man, I even ran up the stairs (three stories) when I got to my apartment

This "marathon" exercise is the best thing I've done to my self in my adult life.<3

EDIT: I'd really like to know some science behind this all....how the hell can I go from doing an exercise and almost tumbling over of exhaustion to being able to complete the exact same exercise three days later and not even break a sweat (so to speak).....AND STILL FEEL LESS EXHAUSTED THAN IN THE FIRST EXERCISE'S SECOND INTERVAL(has 8 intervals in total)?
I know I could not have build up any muscles in this short time, but how is this possible? Chemistry....sure.....but someone please enlighten me.

It's a releasing of all the stored carbohydrates in your body's fats, an activation of enzymes that break them down and use them. In short, your metabolic rate got bumped, and you're still feeling the benefits.

I'm glad to see you're enjoying it, Katu. I started running daily three years ago and have never regretted the choice.

EDIT: As with all diets/serious exercise routines, though, be prepared to hit a wall of exhaustion. It should come in about a week or two, depending on your body's particular metabolic rate. Pushing through that is the real test.

I've been trying to take up running recently, but been hampered by various things. For example, my recent problem has been my foot. I went out running a couple of weeks back and it started hurting. By the end of the run, it was pretty damn painful. So I gave it a few days rest, but didn't want to go too long without running. So I waited until it stopped hurting and went back out. I completed the run and my foot held out, but at the end it started to hurt again. I decided I should give it quite a while to rest properly and hopefully it will be mended for good. Unfortunately that means I have lost out on lots of exercise.

I'm pretty sure God just doesn't want me to get in shape.

God doesn't have a say here. You need to one, stretch, and two, hydrate.

If you don't stretch after every run, you will feel excessive pain and strain. If you do, your muscles will feel fresh and ready to go much more often. It's really that simple. Touch your toes, roll your shoulders and ankles profusely (though not too quickly as to damage the tendons), do high-knees and butt-kickers, and ice down afterwards, followed by a warm bath. It will keep your muscles from contracting and actually promote their growth.

At that point, though, as muscles grow your body will have a much higher water demand. Drink water. And I mean water, not fizzy or sugar-loaded crap (that includes iced tea/coffee). If you don't, you'll end up getting knots in your legs in the middle of the night until you can't even push yourself out of bed, like I used to.

Just pushing yourself isn't enough- you have to take care of your body at the same time.
