No no It's break dance only because of the music. I presume they are dancing polka.

Did you know:

Count all the cells in your body, and only 10% of those cells are your own, the 90% are bacteria.

Take all DNA in your body and only 1% of the DNA information inside you is human DNA.

The first one can be misleading, as I'm pretty sure it's by number but people tend to think it's by mass or volume. Bacteria is much more numerous but also extremely smaller than our own cells.

Also, please elaborate on the second one, it sounds like it's another one of those misleading scientific popular facts. Does it mean that 99% of our DNA is junk DNA? I've never heard that one so I'm curious

Well the first one means what it says...count all the cells and nine out of ten are bacteria....BUT only about 1,2kg of our mass is bacteria.

The second one I might clarify: Take all DNA material inside your body....and you come up with 100 times more bacterial DNA than your own bodies DNA.

PS:and not even your "own" DNA is your own. Most of it has no function what so ever and are most likely a left-over junk from viruses. 98% of YOUR DNA is called "junk DNA" . They do not produce any protein and are most likely a left-over from ancient mutations and viruses leaving their traces on our DNA, making almost all of the DNA mostly "junk". Now there are theories that some small part of that junk DNA might have some regulatory function in relation to other genes, but most of our genes that actually have an affect on our bodies are separated with HUUUUUGE deserts of "junk DNA".

Testing this "junk DNA" which is about 98% of your DNA is very hard, since changing it doesn't seem to cause any effect on the host...thus it is referred as "uncoding DNA".

I know that geneticists have realized that much of what we once thought was "junk" DNA is actually DNA switches which control the timing and intensity of the activation of important genes. Apparently it's hard to detect sections that are "switches" because their functions are so specific and individual that we don't know when they get turned on for what. But these switches explain why we share such an enormous amount of DNA with every living thing from fir trees to oysters to oyster-trees. Every gene's activation can be delayed or amplified enough to create the huge range of characteristics in the world, using only a very small amount of genes. Like the variables in an algebra equation.

I'm not sure if that was what you meant by "theories that some small part of that junk DNA might have some regulatory function in relation to other genes," and I'm sure that only accounts for a small amount of the seemingly useless DNA anyway.

Doesn't the first fact sort of imply this though?

There is no such thing as junk DNA, I just finished a genetics course this past semester and the professor told us "if there is one thing that you learn this semester it's that there is no such thing as junk DNA"

The DNA that doesn't seem to code for anything does exactly what Lord justin said. These parts are referred to as "enhancers" and affect the way the DNA codes some how.

and I think this thread is turning into another science and shiz thread O.o

What is it with people and having their usernames as words spelt backwards around here? Nivek, Ekoms, Biggles... It's crazy.
